CSR: Blood donation drive contributes to country’s blood banks

On an annual basis, the Public Service Commission (PSC) approaches public service institutions seeking to find out whether measures have been put in place to promote constitutional values and principles, as per Articles 10 and 232 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010. The evaluation by PSC includes information on the implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

Pursuant to the need to promote constitutional values and principles, the Commission approved and is currently implementing several CSR initiatives. With this background, a blood donation drive is part of the several initiatives in the Commission’s approved CSR Strategy.

Every 10 minutes, about seven Kenyans need blood, and that blood donor banks in the country require regular replenishment with blood.

SRC, therefore, partnered with the Kenya National Blood Transfusion Service (KNBTS) to conduct a blood donation drive at SRC’s premises at Williamson House, on 14 April 2022.

Nephromed Limited, a clinic housed at Williamson House, also conducted a free health check for all blood donors.

The Commission heeded the call from KNBTS for institutions to “host a blood drive”, and welcomed KNBTS to undertaken the blood drive primarily for SRC staff, but this initiative also included persons working in offices housed at Williamson House.

While the blood donation drive may not fully meet the blood bank needs of the country, this is SRC’s contribution. This blood donation drive will also encourage new donors to join the existing blood donor champions.
