SRC in Open Day on service delivery by ELRC By Stephen Oinga

SRC Commissioner Nelly Ashubwe attended the Employment and Labour Relations Court (ELRC) Open Day, presided over by Hon. Martha Koome, Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court of Kenya.

Court Open Days are crucial for providing a platform for stakeholders within the justice ecosystem, including court users, judges, and judicial officers, to align their efforts and collaborate effectively.

This year’s Open Day, themed Stakeholder Involvement in Case Management for Effective Service Delivery, emphasised on the fundamental role of stakeholders in judicial processes. The day also underscored the importance of collective effort to ensure a harmonious approach in the delivery of justice.

Held on 22 July 2024, at the Milimani Law Court, the Open Day provided an invaluable opportunity for stakeholders to learn about ELRC’s work, share insights, and provide feedback, fostering a deeper understanding and stronger partnerships.

“The Employment and Labour Relations Court has made commendable strides in recent years. I am pleased to highlight the impressive case clearance rate of 190 per cent recorded in the last financial year,” said Hon. Koome.

“The court resolved 8,014 cases compared to the 4,210 cases filed during the same period. As of the end of June 2024, ELRC had 6,966 pending cases, a reduction of 30 per cent from the 9,896 cases pending at the start of the financial year,” added CJ Koome.

“In addition, at the end of June, there were only 240 pending cases that had been in the system for over three years. Thus, the court is on the threshold of attaining our Social Transformation through Access to Justice (STAJ) benchmark, which mandates that no case should remain before a trial court for more than three years,” she said.

The CJ noted that the Judiciary was committed to enhancing accountability, further encouraging the public to continue exposing instances of bribery and corruption for firm resolution by the Judicial Service Commission.

The Open Day was also attended by other government dignitaries, including Amos N. Gathecha, Principal Secretary, State Department for Public Service, and Jacqueline Mugo, Executive Director and CEO of the Federation of Kenya Employers.
