Before the establishment of SRC, remuneration and benefits for public officers were reviewed by ad-hoc committees with limited mandates, addressing only selected sectors of the public service.
This fragmented approach resulted in significant disparities in salaries, allowances, benefits, and job grading across different sectors. The lack of harmonisation in pay structures led to unsustainable demands for higher wages, with little consideration for affordability, fiscal sustainability, transparency, or fairness in remuneration.
The steps taken to address these challenges were among the key achievements outlined in SRC’s End-of-Term Report, presented to the National Assembly’s Labour Committee on 4 September 2024, at Parliament Building.
During the meeting, Lyn Mengich, Chairperson, SRC, expressed her appreciation to the Committee for the support and time given to SRC throughout her tenure. She acknowledged the important role the Committee played in ensuring the success of SRC’s mandate.
Hon. Kagesi Kevai, Chairperson of the Labour Committee, commended SRC for its significant accomplishments, particularly given the limited resources available to deliver its mandate.
He emphasised on the need for the Committee to continue collaborating with SRC, especially on the pending Draft SRC Regulations, which has been awaiting Parliament’s approval.
Also present at the parliamentary session included, Dr. Amani Komora, Vice Chairperson, Commissioners John K. Monyoncho, Dr. Leah Mumbua, Wangui Muchiri, Sophie Moturi, Hon. Sen. Isaac Melly, and Anne Gitau, Commission Secretary/CEO.
The session marked a reflective moment as SRC concluded its six-year tenure, showcasing its effort to promote a fair, transparent, and fiscally responsible wage structure for the public service.
