Social media is a communication channel that stands out as the most popular form of communication today. Research estimates that there are approximately 4.9 billion social media users worldwide, or 61 per cent of the world’s population.

The power of social media experience has been impactful across a wide range of communities, industries and institutions. However, understanding the nuances of being an active social media participant is essential as it has been touted as a double-edged sword for several reasons.

To the Generation Z community, the world of social media and online engagement is part and parcel of everyday life. It is something that, to a large extent, is the primary form of peer-to-peer engagement. This is more than just a habit; it is innate behaviour in its purest sense.

Colleges and universities students are becoming more and more skilled in social media, adapting their online presence and becoming more digitally savvy than ever before.

With this in mind, SRC’s Corporate Communications Department and students of the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) held social media partnership from April to November 2022.

This is in line with SRC’s strategic plan, which recognises collaboration and partnerships with stakeholders, including universities.

The partnership created awareness and visibility for SRC through social media messaging on matters within SRC’s mandate and ensured that the students learnt professional techniques and usage of social media platforms.

SRC’s platforms included; Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Flickr and YouTube, and for which the students engaged through practical expressions and actions.

As a form of appreciation and encouragement, SRC issued certificates of appreciation to students that participated in the partnership. SRC will continue engaging students in various universities.
